Youda Sushi Chef Review

Who thought running a sushi bar would be so much fun?

At first, Youda Sushi Chef seemed like it would be a rather bland game to play. After all, it seemed to us that it would just be a pointless click-fest.

Well… we were proven wrong.

After spending even just one hour with Youda Sushi Chef, we found ourselves clamoring for more sushi-rolling action.

The premise is simple: continually keep your customers happy by rapidly serving them different variations of sushi, while entertaining them with sake or knife tricks. It sounds simple enough… until you get to later levels.

Sure, at first you may only need to mix one piece of salmon with some seaweed and rice, but that doesn’t last very long. As the game progresses, you will soon find yourself needing four or more ingredients of increasing quantities to produce a single order!

Thus, what seems like a pointless click-fest suddenly becomes a test of reflex and memory, because getting even one portion of ingredients wrong results in an order that can’t be served, and costly food wastage that may spell failure.

To add to the game’s depth, the developers also allow you to upgrade each and every restaurant that you open, adding anything from more elaborate bamboo mats (to roll sushi more efficiently with), or faster conveyor belts to serve your customers with.

In the end, Youda Sushi Chef succeeds in all the categories that make a casual game fun. It’s easy to learn, can be played for short sessions, yet has all the potential to keep you glued for hours on end.

Plants vs. Zombies Review

While the crew from Left 4 Dead may have had more direct methods of keeping zombies at bay, PopCap Games shows us a brand new way to keep the world safe.

For as long as we can remember, we’ve been obsessed with zombies.

Let’s face facts; something deep within us will always be a little curious about the mindless horrors that tend to have one interest: eating your brains (or other assorted body parts). Something deep down also makes us want to take the nearest weapon to blow their heads off.

Well, the developers at PopCap Games seem to believe that you DON’T need a shotgun to defeat the undead.

PopCap’s latest title Plants vs. Zombies, takes us to a world where a few plants and some sunlight are our last bastion of defense against the zombie horde.

Yes, this does sound a little silly. However, one needs to spend only fifteen minutes playing the game to realize that through brilliant game design, PopCap has managed to take the zombie killing genre of video games in an entirely new direction.

By using various plants (which have abilities ranging from shooting movement impairing peas to creating massive explosions), players must keep ever-increasing numbers of zombies from breaking through their backyard defenses and into their house.

Needless to say, should the zombies make it into your home, the results are disastrous!

Thankfully, there isn’t any elaborate resource management system that impedes one from killing zombies. The only resource you need to manage is sunlight, and the rest of the game involves using the appropriate plants to kill zombies in rock paper scissors fashion.

If fun gameplay weren’t enough, the developers also back it up with a captivating soundtrack that will have gamers tingling for more action.

While the early waves of zombies are defeated by the most basic of plants, one will eventually need to learn to use fire, ice and other powerful abilities to defeat certain zombie species.

With fifty levels of regular mode, as well as a slew of bonus game modes, Plants vs. Zombies is certainly a game that provides value for money.

Matchmove Games at the Tokyo Game Show!

Matchmove Games, represented by Miguel Bernas, Chief Marketing Officer (5th from left), took part in a trade mission by the Games Exchange Alliance of Singapore to the Tokyo Game Show last month. The mission included visits to the Tokyo Game Show and several Japanese game publishers to explore business opportunities. The mission was organized with the support of the Japanese Online Games Association with support from International Enterprise Singapore.
